The Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system has been taught in many countries for the past 14 years (established January 21, 2003), and the system continues to evolve and get better with each passing year. It was, and still is, the only modular civilian self-defense system that teaches people how to survive the most likely criminal and terrorist attacks as well as developing situational awareness. The Jim Wagner Reality-Based system has an outstanding reputation and it has been endorsed by two of the most popular self-defense magazines in the world: Black Belt magazine and Budo magazine.
Most people coming to the RBPP system just want to learn how to protect themselves and their families, however many martial arts instructors and professionals (correction, law enforcement, and military personnel) want to host RBPP seminars or they want be certified RBPP instructors. We welcome anyone who is serious about joining us in teaching people realistic self-defense training.
Listed below are the different positions within the RBPP system.
Anyone who invites Jim Wagner to teach a course for an organization, company, or self-defense school will be considered a RBPP Coordinator. No former RBPP training or affiliation is required to be a RBPP Coordinator.
The RBPP Coordinator, or the entity he or she represents, must be a valid business, have the proper liability insurance, pay all applicable business taxes, obey all applicable laws, and follow standard accounting practices.
Courses are only authorized in countries friendly to the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Union.
Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse personally trains all RBPP Instructors through private lessons (a private lesson consists of Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse, the student, and provided training partner(s) for the student). Once instructor certified a RBPP Instructor is an independent agent (meaning that they can have their own self-defense business under their own name or a DBA - Doing Business As).
The RBPP Instructor agrees to teach only the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection as their exclusive self-defense system that they teach publicly or privately, but they are allowed to teach any traditional-based martial arts (Karate, Kung-Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, et cetera) or sport-based martial arts (Judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, et cetera) if he or she so chooses. The RBPP Instructor agrees to teach each RBPP course, publically or private lessons, strictly following the most current outline, neither adding to the system nor subtracting from the system.
There are four levels of RBPP instructors that you may become. They are:
RBPP Level 1 Instructor
RBPP Level 2 Instructor
RBPP Level 3 Instructor
RBPP Knife Survival Instructor
All RBPP Instructors will be listed on this official Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection website as a certified RBPP instructor. If the RBPP Instructor keeps his or her credentials current their courses will be indorsed and listed on the RBPP website under the TRAINING SCHEDULE page. The RBPP Instructor will be granted permission to use the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection outlines, graphics, and logos. The RBPP Instructor will issue training certificates to their students personally signed by Jim Wagner (students completing any RBPP course, either taught in one day or over a period of time, will receive immediately an electronic copy by email, and then a hard copy with the official embossed RBPP seal affixed upon it). As a member of the RBPP International Association the instructor will get regular updates and made aware of any changes within the system.
To qualify as a RBPP Level 1 Instructor the candidate must complete the following 5 Level 1 courses listed below, only obtained through private lessons by either Jim Wagner (in Los Angeles) or Christophe Besse (in Paris). These courses give the candidate the foundation of the RBPP system, and it also gives Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse the opportunity to evaluate the candidate’s skills, knowledge, motivation, and teaching abilities:
Upon the successful completion of the RBPP Level 1 courses the new instructor is awarded the official title of RBPP Level 1 Instructor, and he or she will be listed as such on the official Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection website under the country that he or she teaches in. They will then have the privilege of teaching the RBPP system to STUDENTS ONLY, and will not be qualified to teach or certify instructors.
To qualify as a RBPP Level 3 Instructor the instructor must complete the following two Level 3 courses listed below, obtained through private lessons by either Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse.
Women’s Survival (4 hours)
Children’s Survival (4 hours)
These courses can be done through video conference at scheduled times.
NOTE:A RBPP Level 3 Instructor is qualified to be the RBPP Director of a region or the country if the position is vacant.
Upon the successful completion of the Level 3 courses the instructor’s official title will change from RBPP Level 2 Instructor to RBPP Level 3 Instructor, and he or she will be listed as such on the official Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection website under the country that they teach in. They will have the privilege of teaching the RBPP system to STUDENTS ONLY, and will not be qualified to teach or certify instructors.
A Knife Instructor is a specialized instructor, which requires the least amount of study and expense to become an official certified RBPP instructor. Some self-defense instructors, or even beginners for that matter, become a Knife Survival Instructor first to “test the waters,” so to speak, before becoming a Level 1 instructor.
To qualify as a RBPP Knife Instructor the candidate must complete the following 4 courses (known as Knife Camp) listed below, obtained through private lessons by either Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse.
1. Knife Survival (8 hours)
2. Knife Expert (6 hours)
3. Tactical Knife (2 hours)
4. Knife Instructor (8 hours)
RBPP Director of a region or a country
A RBPP Director is an appointed position by Jim Wagner, and is mentored by both Jim Wagner and Christophe Besse.
Once appointed as the RBPP Director of a region or a country he or she will be listed as such on the official Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection website under the region or country he or she is directing. The RBPP Director will have the privilege of teaching the RBPP system to STUDENTS ONLY, and will NOT be qualified to teach or certify instructors.
The RBPP Director will be the only RBPP representative in the region or country to produce approved RBPP merchandise bearing the logo(s). For example: the printing of RBPP T-shirts, coffee mugs, pens, bags, and promotional pieces. All RBPP instructors in a region or country will order their products from the RBPP Director.
Definition of “country or region.” Country refers to a sovereign nation. For example, Fabrizio Capucci is the RBPP Director of Italy. However, some countries have different cultures and more than one official language within their borders such as Switzerland. For this country RBPP has divided the country into three separate regions: French speaking Switzerland, German speaking Switzerland, and Italian speaking Switzerland. For this country three different RBPP directors are necessary.
Jim Wagner is not only the founder of the RBPP system, but he is also the RBPP Director of United States of America. Since the United States is such a large country, there will be RBPP Directors for each of the 50 states, the Federal District, and the five inhabited territories. Since these positions only became available January 1, 2017 there are currently no directors for any of the states, Washington, D.C., or territories.
RBPP Assistant Director
A RBPP Assistant Director is appointed directly by the RBPP Director with the approval of Jim Wagner. The minimum requirement to be a RBPP Assistant Director is to be a current certified Level 1 instructor. A RBPP Assistant Director may assist with courses and/or administrative duties.
RBPP Tactical Tutor
A RBPP Tactical Tutor is an instructor who has been personally trained by Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse, and who is hired by Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse at an hourly wage to specifically teach Reality-Based Personal Protection seminars, courses, and private lessons on their behalf. A RBPP Director of a region country can request a Tactical Tutor to help with their seminars, courses, or private lessons. The instructions given by a Tactical Tutor to students and RBPP instructors is recognized and applied towards instructor certification if being instructor certification is the desired goal. When not directly hired by Jim Wagner or Christophe Besse a Tactical Tutor, like any RBPP Instructor, is an independent agent subject to all instructor rules.
RBPP Instructors with expired training certificates
We respect and honor all past Reality-Based Personal Protection instructors. This is why anyone who has ever been certified will remain listed as an instructor.
Any RBPP instructor certified before January 1, 2017 will be listed under the old RBPP system logo (the two men fighting), whereas all new instructors after January 1, 2017 are listed under the new RBPP logo (the four squares). Those listed under the new logo indicates that they are authorized to teach the RBPP Levels that they are certified for directly under the authority of Jim Wagner. These RBPP Instructors teach the RBPP system as their exclusive self-defense system.
Any RBPP instructor with expired certificates wanting to be a part of the new RBPP system, subject to the rules, may renew their certificates by joining the RBPP International Association. A grace period will be extended for six months, until June 30, 2017, to join. After this date any instructors with expired training certificates wishing to have valid certificates will have to physically take each course again.
